Latest News from Mission Direct Committee
Virtually Successful!
For the first time in the history of our Society, the Mission Committee met virtually on the 30 June. A diverse group of brethren serving in different settings and representing all of our provincial regions meet together on Zoom to share good practice , encourage one another in mission and envisage how catholic mission could be reinvigorated in the parishes and institutions served by priests of the Society of the Holy Cross. In a wide-ranging discussion brethren spoke about what was going well for them and about what they were discovering to be catalysts and inhibitors for mission. As well as discussing the enduring significance of the Youth Pilgrimage and Family Fest, the brothers also considered why Alpha could be used appropriately in a catholic context as well as the importance of getting our built facilities fit to support and stimulate mission. Another highlight was an inspiring conversation on the ministry of a community foodbank that is being led by a brother in the North West. The conversations were much enhanced by the presence and wise participation of both the Provincial Master and the Provincial Treasurer.
It was very heartening that a total of thirteen applications for grant funding had been received, something of a record for recent times and a great testament to the commitment to mission that exists widely amongst our brethren. In response to these applications grants totalling £2800 were awarded to support groups attending the Youth Pilgrimage or Family Fest. A further £2000 was granted in support of parish-based mission initiatives including children and families ministry, Alpha courses and Fan the Flame Teaching weeks. An additional £600 was contributed towards the cost of three projects to improve facilities in order to aid missional activities. It was good to see that the successful grant applications came from across our Provincial Regions.
The Committee made the important decision that from the 30th June 2022 onwards there will be no ceiling on potential grants for direct person to person mission activities but grants for the provision of facilities to aid mission will be limited to a maximum of £200 per application.
Although the ambition of the brethren was such that £11,170 was sought by way of missional funding our funds only allowed us to make grants of £5,400. No application was refused but so much more good would have been done if we had been able to fully grant each of the deserving applications that were received. The increased funding of Mission Direct is something which the brethren will want to consider closely if we are to increase our missional reach and to better facilitate the spreading of the bounds of the Catholic Faith amongst the people served by our brethren.
The Mission Committee will be hoping to use the remaining budget of £1000 to make several further small grants for Advent mission activities. Grant Applications need to be submitted by mid-November by email to:
